RODENT-PROOFING YOUR HOME FOR WINTER
RODENT-PROOFING YOUR HOME FOR WINTER

As the colder temps start to settle in, your home becomes a warm sanctuary that’s perfect for hiding out from blustering winds, snow, and the harshness that comes with wintertime. You’re certainly not the only one who finds an escape in the comfort of your home, though. When it’s cold outside, wildlife like rodents seek cozy spaces just like yours. Creating a warm, inviting space for humans but not for rodents may seem difficult, but with these handy tips from your friends at 24/7 Local Pest Control you can live rodent-free all season long!
- Hide the food— While a few leftover crumbs may not seem like much to you, they can provide a feast for rodents. To avoid sharing your kitchen with these pesky critters, make sure all of your food is sealed and stored above counter level. If there are leftovers on the counter or dirty dishes in the sink, rodents will gladly help themselves to dinner. They won’t stop at your food, though! If you have pets, don’t leave their food sitting out in a bowl or leave a bag of kibble open to the air. If you take extra care to pick up around your oven, fridge, and counters, you can make your home less inviting to rodents.
- Seal off entry points— Rodents look for any way to get into your home, and with their tiny bodies, they don’t need much of an opening to sneak in. To keep them out, seal any gap that’s bigger than ¼ of an inch, as that’s enough room for a mouse to squeeze through. Check for gaps in your exterior doors, holes in your window screens, and openings where pipes enter your home. To seal up gaps, try using copper wool or aluminum window screen.
- Don’t forget the yard— While you may not be thinking about yard work in the dead of winter, an overgrown yard can provide plenty of hiding spaces for rodents that may eventually find their way into your home. Cut branches that hang over your house, as rodents can climb those to access your roof. Get rid of leaf piles and weeds, and make sure your garbage cans are sealed. If you’ve got firewood, store it off the ground and away from your home. Keep your property rodent-free and let these unsanitary pests become someone else’s problem!
- Clean up the clutter— Rodents love to hide in clutter, whether it’s a pile of clothes in your laundry room or unorganized boxes in your shed. Use this as an excuse to get organized, tidying up bedrooms, bathrooms, basements, and garages. To give rodents even fewer hiding places, store boxes off of the floor. The last thing you want is to be surprised when you step on a pile of clothes and find a mouse underneath!
